Baking a Cake
Shuffle, shuffle, my Great Grandma was wobbling to the car. It was Friday afternoon (Greats and Grands day). I was about to go to my Grandparents house in Opononi. We were just waiting for my Great Grandma whose very old bones found it hard to get in the car. We had to pick up a pizza on the way for dinner because they didn’t have anything prepared.
Once we were there we did our own thing until about 6:30pm. Then we heated up our pizza. After we ate, my Nan showed me a recipe for hummingbird cake, she really wanted to make it. So we washed our hands and got to work. I couldn’t find most ingredients because they had just finished the new house. Well it’s not completely finished but I didn’t know where anything was, so she got most of the ingredients. It was a three layer cake. Soon we had cooked the three cakes and let them cool. We looked at the clock and decided to make the icing in the morning. The next day we had breakfast and started on the icing. It had a lot of icing sugar and a lot of cream cheese in it. We put the icing in the middle of the cakes and then all around the cakes. I didn’t spread it, because I couldn’t. Once we had perfected it we put pecan nuts on the top.
Finally we were done. We took a photo and then cut a piece. I couldn’t eat it all, it was huge and sweet. A little while later my dad came with my brother. My mum and sister were in Auckland for the Silver Ferns netball game so they couldn’t come. We stayed for a while then we left and we were given a quarter of the cake. It was a very tiring day and I went straight to sleep when we got home.
